The wildlife art of Lucien van Oosten

"...draw and paint what inspires you. Never draw and create in the belief that other's will like it...."

" I like to be creative in many media and I really do not have a favorite media per say. I love drawing in pencil and getting my ideas down in my sketchbook for later reference and use. I draw the same way I paint or it might be better to say I paint the same way I draw, by layering. I really love the monochromatic of a good pencil or pen and ink drawing. One of my favorite methods of drawing is pointillism and I use this technique to do study sketches of the subjects I intend to paint.

"I guess over the years many people and artists have influenced my work, and me. However, I believe the greatest influence has been god and the creations that God has put all around us. As a Child growing up in Pasadena, California, I often went for long hikes through the San Gabriel Mountains where I obtained a real love and keen fascination for nature and its creatures. The variety, its vastness, its splendor, and the life it fosters is my inspiration. Then as now, my favorite thing to do is to go to any place where there is water and animals: the Zoo, the Aquarium, the nature center.

"The artists that have influenced my work range from Suerat and Pissarro with their pointillism paintings, to Almda Tademan's realistic works, to Vermeer and Anton Pieck depicting life with there Norman Rockwell like illustrative painting styles.

"I think my work speaks for itself: the trueness of the way I represent the creatures in my artwork is a statement of my fascination for the world and its inhabitants. My artwork has been displayed at the Citrus College Library, the SOHO gallery in downtown Pomona, and other venues. I am available to do commissions."
